Is this the right Breed for you?
Westies love people and make an affectionate addition to any family. They are outgoing and friendly, and compared to other terriers, are among the most charming, loyal, affectionate, and intelligent. They are a small breed, seldom growing over 22 lbs. (Height at Withers: Male 10-11"; Female 9-10"; Weight: 14 to 22 pounds) and usually living between 9 to 17 years. They have the endurance of a much larger dog. Originally bred for chasing down vermin, Westies make excellent companion dogs and great playmates for children. They love their power hugs, but never sit still for long.
This devoted, happy and faithful dog also makes a wonderful travel companion due to its small size. However, even though Westies are small, thet are NOT a toy breed. They are a full-sized, rock-solid breed who thinks is a large dog. They are smart, courageous, and alert, which makes them very good watch dogs.
Westies are extremely active, assertive, playful and loving. They love going for interesting walks, riding in the car, chasing lizards, and barking at any strange noise. They will announce all visitors with a bark, but seldom become vicious. Westies are quite sociable and the most cheerful of Scotland's terriers, having a pronounced optimistic outlook on life.
Even though some say Westies are non-shedding, the truth is that they DO shed a little! A Westie's hard dry coat requires grooming on a regular basis and most look forward to the attention of brushing and haircuts. Brushing out your Westie daily will result in very little shedding. Their skin tends to be drier than that of most dogs, which is why they have very little doggy odor. The breed standard calls for a double coat with wiry straight outer coat and a soft undercoat. Introduce your puppy to grooming as early as possible and follow the standard for Westie grooming (stripping) for best results.
